We were able to hear Lunga’s vision for Khayelitsha. For the past several years, he has been mentoring and discipling about 20 young men. Because the fathers are not present, there is a big need for older males to mentor younger men. Through this, Lunga developed a vision for the city: to build a youth center where young men and women can be tutored, empowered, and sent into this world. The education system in Khayelitsha is poor. No schools have computers to teach the youth, so they are already at a disadvantage when going into the real world. Because the people know this, many young men fall into a cycle of drinking and poverty. Lunga shared with us that he wasn’t well equipped to face the world because he didn’t know how to use a computer himself. Because of this, he wants to change this and inspire the youth to succeed in SA and to bring this success back to Khayelitsha and inspire the next generation of youth.

 

Lunga is currently trying to get his organization, Light House Foundation, as a registered and official non-profit organization. In the meanwhile, he has recruited 2 facilitators to help him tutor these students and open up a Youth Café. He is looking for a school to open their facilities so that he will have the space to start his Leadership Academy in the next coming months. His ultimate goal is to buy a piece of land and to build a 2-story building with classrooms, a kitchen, an arts-orientated space, and a game room. To do all of this, he estimates he needs about $80,000 only. Currently, he is looking for the funds to buy 8 laptops (~$400 each), stationary, and desks for the students to practice and learn. He also has a financial need as a missionary since both him and his wife are full-time missionaries. As stated above, he has three children (one newborn). While there, our team was able to bless him with baby products, cell phone data, and some cash help. Though this may help him in the short run, both he and his foundation need funding. How PEM can help is still in the air. We will cast our vision for SA in the next upcoming weeks and will move forward then.
